Albert Ramdin was elected by acclamation this week as the new secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS) to serve a five-year term. The election of Ramdin, Suriname’s foreign minister, marks a significant change. He is more understated and less dogmatic than Luis Almagro, the former Uruguayan foreign minister who he will succeed in May. But Ramdin is taking over the reins at a challenging time. The fact that he looks favourably on a dialogue process with the Venezuelan government and improved relations with China, for instance, could put him on collision course with the US government of President Donald Trump.
