MEXICO: Corruption credentials under scrutiny

The latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), released by global anti-corruption NGO Transparency International (TI) on 11 February, described Mexico as being on a “downward swing”. Indeed, Mexico’s score fell in the 2024 report for the first time since 2018, when former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) took office. The score indicates that, despite initial optimism, the NGO is not convinced by the progress that López Obrador made against corruption during his six years in office. President Claudia Sheinbaum, a close ally and protégée of López Obrador, has dismissed the report’s findings and defended her predecessor’s anti-corruption legacy.
