Tensions are once again boiling over between Venezuela and Guyana, 15 months on from the December 2023 referendum in which Venezuelan voters expressed support for annexing the disputed Essequibo region. On 1 March the Guyanese government stepped up naval patrols after a Venezuelan coastguard vessel entered Guyana’s internationally recognised waters and approached an oil rig operated by the US firm ExxonMobil.
