ARGENTINA: Milei moves to cement ties with US

Argentina’s President Javier Milei has upended his country’s foreign policy in a gesture of obeisance to US President Donald Trump. That is, at least, the interpretation the country’s political opposition parties placed on Milei’s decision this week to instruct Argentina’s ambassador to the United Nations (UN) to abstain in a vote on a resolution in the UN General Assembly proposed by Ukraine (but opposed by the US) on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion. The UN vote came days after Milei visited Washington, where he met Trump on the sidelines of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), gifted his billionaire confidant Elon Musk a chainsaw, and enthusiastically embraced the prospect of tariff reciprocity.
