Bukele uses sweeping new powers to reform constitution

El Salvador’s legislative assembly has voted to amend the constitution to eliminate the state financing of political parties competing in electoral processes. The political opposition objected to the reform, arguing that public funding was essential to uphold the party political system. President Nayib Bukele was fiercely critical of the opposition.
