TRINIDAD & TOBAGO: Army ammunition goes missing as violent crime soars

The national security minister of Trinidad & Tobago, Fitzgerald Hinds, ordered an investigation this week into the disappearance of in excess of 25,000 rounds of ammunition from an army barracks. The ammunition went missing from the Cumuto Barracks in the north-eastern region of Sangre Grande. It could scarcely come at a worse time for the government, which declared a state of emergency on 30 December last year to try and reverse a surge in violent crime, principally as a result of inter-gang conflict, which has seen record homicides in the twin-island state.
