In brief: Brazil’s coffee exports down year-on-year

*Brazil’s national council of coffee exporters (Cecafé) has released the export figures for January, putting monthly exports at 3.98m sacks of coffee (one sack = 60kg). This marks an increase from the 3.92m sacks exported in December, but a decrease from the 4.04m sacks in January 2024. Despite the year-on-year drop, Cecafé stated in a press release that it views this monthly figure as a strong result for the off-season. This is also the second highest result registered for the month of January in the past five years. In terms of coffee varieties, exports of arabica came to 3.28m sacks in January, down 0.3% compared to the same month in 2024, while monthly exports of the canephora varieites (robusta and conilon) totalled 328,074 sacks, down 28.9% in yearly terms. The top three export destinations in January this year were the US, which imported a total of 713,348 sacks, up 3.1% from January 2024; followed by Germany, with 457,569 sacks (-35.0% year-on-year); and Italy, with 262,809 sacks (+31.2%).
