Press freedom groups have widely condemned the killing of Mexican journalist Alejandro Gallegos León, whose body was found in Cárdenas municipality, Tabasco state, on 25 January. He was the second Mexican journalist to have been killed so far this year, following the murder of Calletano de Jesús Guerrero in Estado de México (Edomex) on 17 January. The insecurity facing journalists is an issue that President Claudia Sheinbaum has yet to tackle head on. Press freedom groups hope that Sheinbaum will take a different approach than her predecessor and mentor, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), who employed hostile rhetoric against journalists and downplayed the violence they faced.
