On 10 January Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum launched ‘Sí al Desarme, Sí a la Paz’ (Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace), a programme aimed at reducing violence by encouraging civilians to hand in their firearms in exchange for money. The initiative is part of the ‘attention to root causes’ pillar in Sheinbaum’s national security strategy. While the programme may go some way to reducing the prevalence of firearms among the public, it will fail to tackle the main source of gun violence in the country, which is perpetrated by drug trafficking organisations (DTOs) and other criminal groups, who largely use firearms trafficked from the US.End of preview - This article contains approximately 970 words.
