*Mexico’s President
Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a national plan to strengthen and expand the electricity system for the period 2025-2030. The US$22.38bn initiative will be led by the state-run electricity firm Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to boost power generation, transmission, and distribution. The plan includes 51 projects that will add 22,674 megawatts to the grid, expand renewable energy generation, and improve access to electricity. Key projects include seven CFE wind farms, nine CFE solar plants, five combined-cycle natural gas plants, an internal combustion facility, three cogeneration projects in collaboration with state-run oil company Pemex, and increased battery storage. Additionally, 26 projects launched under the
Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) administration will be completed. Energy Minister
Luz Elena González Escobar emphasised that the plan guarantees a
“sufficient, sustainable, reliable and accessible electricity supply”, aiming to connect 500,000 more homes to electricity within four years and expand free internet coverage to 97% of the country. Sheinbaum called the plan ambitious yet financially sound, supported by the CFE’s strategy, and noted that new legislation will ensure most energy growth remains in the public sector.
