SURINAME: Bouterse’s death could influence elections

Suriname’s former president Desi Bouterse (2010-2020) died in hiding in late December. Bouterse had been on the run for a year after losing an appeal against a 20-year prison sentence for ordering the killings of 15 political opponents in 1982 when he was army commander and de facto president. Bouterse retained a significant level of popularity in spite of his checkered past and his populist Nationale Democratische Partij (NDP) will hope his passing results in a polling boost ahead of elections on 25 May.
