ECUADOR: Vice president replaced as campaign period begins

The deep animosity between Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa and Vice President Verónica Abad came to a head shortly before the campaign period for general elections began on 5 January. Noboa, who is obliged to pass presidential duties to the vice president while carrying out campaign activities for the first round of presidential elections on 9 February, had ruled out handing power to Abad, who has been exiled to the Middle East to serve in diplomatic roles for most of his presidency. The public administration secretary, Cynthia Gellibert, will take the reins during Noboa’s leave of absence.
