The deep animosity between Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa and Vice President Verónica Abad came to a head shortly before the campaign period for general elections began on 5 January. Noboa, who is obliged to pass presidential duties to the vice president while carrying out campaign activities for the first round of presidential elections on 9 February, had ruled out handing power to Abad, who has been exiled to the Middle East to serve in diplomatic roles for most of his presidency.
