Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro seems all but certain to be sworn in for a third term on 10 January despite a final push by the political opposition to try and encourage a military rebellion against his leadership. Major street demonstrations were planned in Venezuela for 9 January and were expected to be attended by the opposition’s de-facto leader, María Corina Machado, in her first public appearance after months in hiding.
