Brazil’s mixed results for environmental protection efforts

Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva, and other government officials announced new programmes on 18 December aimed at tackling deforestation in the Pantanal and Caatinga biomes. Government figures have shown that deforestation has decreased in recent months, but figures collected by academics and civil society groups highlight the persistent threat of forest fires, especially in the Amazon biome.
