COLOMBIA: Petro suffers twin setbacks in congress

Colombia’s government has gone into the three-month congressional recess bruised by two legislative setbacks over the past week. Of most immediate concern to President Gustavo Petro is the rejection of his government’s tax reform bill, raising the spectre of painful budget cuts in 2025. This was followed just six days later by the failure to get his political reform bill over the line, which among other things would have required election campaigns to be fully state-funded.
