*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade “should be expanded in many ways towards the south” in order to boost the “economic potential” of the region. Sheinbaum was speaking after a meeting with Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, with whom she spoke of the importance of unity and integration in Latin America through intergovernmental mechanisms such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac). She noted the ideological affinities between her government and that of Petro, as well as with other “progressive” administrations in the region, citing those of Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Honduras, Guatemala, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Cuba. The current USMCA is up for review in 2026, with US President-elect Donald Trump indicating he intends to submit the agreement to a full renegotiation.
