In brief: Paraguay’s congress approves 2025 budget

*Paraguay’s lower chamber of congress has approved the government’s budget proposal for 2025, upholding modifications which had been made by the senate. The budget now goes to President Santiago Peña for promulgation. The senate had made some changes to the original G$132.9trn (US$17.92bn) budget proposal submitted by the Peña administration, raising spending on health, culture, and sport, and introducing higher pay for prison guards, among other things. To fund this, legislators made changes to the sources of financing, while maintaining the “general amounts” approved by a bicameral legislative commission, according to a statement from the chamber of deputies.
