COLOMBIA: Deepening or damaging the peace process?

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro named 18 agents of peace this week, comprising prominent former leaders of the demobilised paramilitary group, Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). The details are vague, but the appointment of perpetrators of some of the worst massacres to have taken place in Colombia is deeply controversial. Petro’s call for the reopening of the peace process with the AUC nearly 20 years after the event when there are so many faltering peace processes currently in place could undermine his total peace initiative. Petro is also trying to advance talks with the heir to the AUC, the Clan del Golfo, the largest illegal armed group in Colombia.
