MEXICO: Querétaro massacre shatters ‘safe haven’ image

Mexico’s central state of Querétaro is not typically associated with the high violent crime rates that plague neighbouring states such as Guanajuato, Michoacán, or Estado de México (Edomex). However, on 9 November gunmen burst into Los Cantaritos bar in the state capital, Querétaro city, and opened fire, killing 10 people and injuring many more. The incident has revealed the fragility of security in one of Mexico’s safer states, challenging the notion that certain states are to some extent immune to the incursion of organised crime.
