Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa knows the decisive factor in his re-election bid in February next year is likely to be the public perception of security. As such, the government is pointedly carrying out weekly press conferences showcasing the statistical improvements that have been made, notably in reducing violent homicides, since Noboa took office nearly one year ago. The interior minister, Mónica Palencia, claimed this week that intentional homicides had fallen by 17.6% to 5,589 in the year to 3 November compared with the same period in 2023.
