AMLO made significant gains in poverty reduction

AMLO took office in 2018 proclaiming “for the good of all, first the poor”. Up to a point, he did in fact deliver what could be called pro-poor policies. The government funded but autonomous Consejo Nacional de Evalucación de la Política de Desarrollo Social (CONEVAL) which carries out household incomes surveys every two years, has reported that the population in ‘multi-dimensional poverty’ has dropped from 51.9m (41.9% of the total) to 46.8m (36.3% of the total) between 2018 and 2022. The period covers the first four or AMLO’s six years in office. CONEVAL uses the concept of multi-dimensional poverty to take into account factors such as access to education and health, as well as a financial measure of poverty.
