When he took office in late 2018 many in the business community were nervous and anxious about AMLO’s plans for the economy. The new president had, after all, a reputation as a left-wing populist firebrand. He was coming to office after at least three decades of centre-right administrations that had focused on fiscal tightening at the expense of the working classes and the poor. Business groups feared a lurch to the left, perhaps with recklessly expansionist tax and spend policies, nationalisations, and claims that private sector elites were deeply mired in corruption and cronyism.
