Claudia and Andrés: is the chemistry, right?

On 1 October this year AMLO stepped down as president of Mexico after a highly popular if controversial six years in office. He handed the reins of power to Claudia Sheinbaum who has become the country’s first woman president. Both are members of the left wing Movimiento de Renovación Nacional (Morena). Although Morena followed a formal candidate selection process it is also clear that Sheinbaum was AMLO’s personal top pick. As leader of Mexico City’s government (2018-2023) she has been a close AMLO ally for years. She won a landslide victory in the June presidential elections. In that poll Morena and its allies captured a two-thirds majority in congress. There are some differences between the two. Sheinbaum, as a climate scientist, is greener in outlook than AMLO. She also speaks up for women’s rights in contrast to AMLO’s more socially conservative stance. That said, both claim to see eye-to-eye on major policy issues. Sheinbaum expressed support for AMLO’s last package of reforms, including the much-criticised direct elections of judges. Mexico, it might be argued, as the 12th largest economy in the world, and the US’s top trading partner, is now poised for a period of stable economic growth and strongly rising living standards.
