HONDURAS: Killing of prominent activist reignites familiar concerns

The murder in September of Juan López, a prominent environmentalist, has reignited familiar concerns regarding the plight of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Honduras. Having drawn alarm from the Pope, the United Nations (UN) Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), European Union, and US, among others, López’s killing is subjecting the leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro to fresh criticism for failing to deliver on a key human rights priority since taking office in January 2022.
