PARAGUAY: Civil society raises alarm over NGO oversight bill

Paraguay’s congress has approved a controversial bill which some local media outlets have dubbed the ‘ley anti-ONG’ (‘anti-NGO law’). The proposal seeks to establish tighter financial oversight regulations on NGOs. While lawmakers affiliated with the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) have claimed that the sector is under-regulated, national and international NGOs and human rights groups have criticised the bill as a sign of democratic backsliding.
