CHILE: Carabineros chief faces reckoning over alleged brutality

General Ricardo Yáñez stepped down as director general of the Carabineros militarised police force on 27 September due to allegations of human rights abuses committed during the social unrest in 2019-2020 known as the ‘Estallido Social’. On 1 October he attended the first court hearing in which he was formally charged. The pressure on the former head of the Carabineros also comes amid rising political pressure on the interior minister, Carolina Tohá, who was the subject of an impeachment motion tabled by far-right opposition lawmakers on 30 September.
