MEXICO: Concerns as government moves to limit judicial power

On 30 October Mexico’s lower chamber of congress approved a bill to prohibit courts from challenging or suspending constitutional reforms passed by congress. The bill, which was approved in the senate on 24 October, has drawn criticism from the political opposition, legal analysts, and rights groups as giving the legislature – which is dominated by the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) – supremacy over the judiciary, leaving little avenue for the government’s actions to be challenged.
