MEXICO: Chiapas priest killing draws outrage

Authorities in Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas have announced the arrest of an individual suspected of murdering a local Catholic priest and human rights defender (HRD), Marcelo Pérez Pérez, on 20 October. Pérez’s murder has sparked an outpouring of condemnation from local and international human rights groups and indigenous organisations. His killing is yet another reflection of the insecurity crisis facing Chiapas. The murder also reflects the dangers facing HRDs in Mexico, with calls for the government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to ensure protection for those defending human rights.
