MEXICO: García Luna sentenced

Genaro García Luna, who served as Mexico’s top security official from 2006-2012, was sentenced to over 38 years in prison in the US on 16 October. Although not the life sentence that the prosecution gunned for, the sentence is much greater than the minimum of 20 years that the former drug czar could have received and makes him the highest ranking former Mexican official to be convicted in the US. The sentencing has once again thrown up questions surrounding collusion between organised crime and the upper echelons of government in Mexico.
