PERU: Ex-president Toledo gets 20 years for Odebrecht bribe

Peruvian prosecutors investigating pervasive bribery by the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht claimed their first presidential scalp on 21 October, when former president Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) was sentenced to 20 years in prison. With two other former presidents, as well as the three-time presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, also accused of receiving illegal payments from Odebrecht, the corruption scandal continues to roil Peruvian politics 10 years after the Lava Jato investigation was first launched in Brazil in 2014.
