EL SALVADOR: Ambitious debt-for-nature deal sealed

On 16 October El Salvador’s government announced a deal with the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), an independent agency of the US government and the Latin American development bank (CAF), which President Nayib Bukele described as the “most ambitious and impactful environmental action in El Salvador’s history”. The deal will enable El Salvador to finance part of its debt at the same time as funding the conservation, water security, and ecosystem restoration in the Rio Lempa watershed, one of the longest rivers in Central America.
