DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Progress on key promise

Dominican President Luis Abinader has been able to point to progress regarding a key pledge he made ahead of taking office on 16 August for a second term: constitutional reform. In one of the first tangible results of the newly bolstered presence of his ruling Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM) in the bicameral legislature, following his May landslide election victory, Abinader’s proposed constitutional reform package has cleared a major hurdle. However, another of his declared priorities - fiscal reform - is proving more contentious.
