In brief: WB and Japan project tackles Honduras youth unemployment

*The World Bank (WB), Japanese and Honduran governments have launched a project aimed at benefitting residents in Choloma and Villanueva municipalities, both in Honduras’ Cortés department, through rehabilitating infrastructure to make it more resilient to climate change. The initiative, which is financed with a US$2.75m donation from Japan and has technical support from the WB, will also aim to improve technical abilities of young people there, boosting their job prospects and capacity to generate income. According to a WB press release, the initiative will benefit 750 young people. Selected due to their high vulnerability to climate change, the municipalities have a total population of 3,600 people. A WB press release highlights 2023 data showing that less than half (43.50%) of young people in Honduras aged 15 to 24 are in employment while around a third (31.52%) of young people in this age group are not in employment, education, or training (known as Neets in English or Ninis in Spanish). It also highlights the fact that at 11.42%, the youth unemployment rate is higher than the general unemployment rate of 6.4% while on average young people earn some 22.12% less than the average for adults.
