PERU: Transport strike puts spotlight on extortion

Transport workers went on strike in Peru’s capital Lima on 10 October for the second time in two weeks, as they stepped up their demands for tougher action against extortionists. President Dina Boluarte’s government has responded by stating that extortion is its main focus, declaring a state of emergency in the capital and submitting a bill against ‘urban terrorism’ that would make extortion punishable with at least 25 years’ imprisonment.
