EL SALVADOR: Unions prepare protests

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is not used to facing protest action. On the rare occasions that the popular authoritarian populist head of state has been on the receiving end of protests he has used his consummate control of social media to downplay them. His ability to set the political narrative could be tested on 19 October. Teachers and medical unions are preparing to stage large-scale protest marches against fiscal austerity measures proposed by his government that would have a detrimental impact on their members’ salaries.
