Former minister for Haitians living abroad Leslie Voltaire (2004) has assumed the six-month rotating presidency of Haiti’s nine-member transitional presidential council (TPC) six months early. The TPC was set up in April [WR-24-17] following the unprecedented gang attacks in late February which forced out former prime minister Ariel Henry (2021-2024). Voltaire, who represents Fanmi Lavalas (FL), of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide (1991; 1994-1996; 2001-2004), takes over the TPC leadership instead of Smith Augustin, one of three TPC members named in a report by the government’s anti-corruption unit (ULCC) which was finally made public last week. The TPC’s travails were overshadowed, however, by one of the worst massacres in Haiti’s recent history, laying bare the scale of the challenge still posed by the gangs.End of preview - This article contains approximately 957 words.
