*Brazil’s government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has submitted a bill to congress which proposes the creation of Alada, a state-owned company to develop aerospace infrastructure and equipment. Alada would be a subsidiary of another state company overseen by the defence ministry, NAV Brasil, which operates air traffic control and other air navigation services. The creation of Alada has reportedly been a long-time demand of the air force (FAB). The project has also been backed by lawmakers with ties to the military, such as Marcos Pontes, an astronaut and senator who previously served in the FAB, before going on to serve as science minister (2019-2022) in the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). If the legislation to create the company is approved, Alada is also expected to produce equipment for the Alcântara space centre in the north-eastern state of Maranhão, which is used as a rocket launch site by the Brazilian space agency (AEB) and is operated by the FAB.
