CHILE: Insecurity sharpens political tensions

The politicisation of public security in Chile reached new heights this week. The far-right opposition Partido Republicano (PR) presented an impeachment motion against the interior minister, Carolina Tohá, on 30 September. The catalyst for the PR’s move against Tohá was the forced resignation of the director general of Chile’s militarised Carabineros police force, Ricardo Yáñez, although the party also has one eye firmly on regional and municipal elections at the end of the month, with security the main public concern. Not to be outdone 15 deputies from the right-of-centre Renovación Nacional (RN) stated their intention to present an impeachment motion against President Gabriel Boric over mismanagement of public security, although this was promptly disavowed by the party president and the RN’s political partners in the Chile Vamos coalition.
