Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa will face 15 challengers in next year’s presidential elections, the first round of which will be held on 9 February. Noboa remains popular due to his heavy-handed anti-gang strategy and is in a strong position to win re-election. However, he still faces headwinds as he battles an ongoing crime wave, an ailing economy, fast-spreading forest fires, and an energy crisis which is approaching its second year.
