In brief: X requests Brazil suspension to be lifted

*Social media company X (formerly Twitter) has filed an official request for Brazil’s supreme court (STF) to lift the suspension imposed on its platform in late August. The STF ordered X to be blocked in Brazil after months of rising tensions over content moderation, escalating to the point that X shuttered its office in the country and refused to appoint a legal representative to receive court orders. However, on 20 September X backed down and put forward a lawyer to be its representative in Brazil. In its latest request to bring the platform back online, the company insisted that it has complied with all the STF’s demands. In addition to appointing a legal representative, X also agreed to pay overdue fines and to take down the accounts of users under investigation in Brazil for spreading disinformation. Sources cited in the national press, such as daily newspaper Folha de São Paulo, have suggested that the judge overseeing the case, STF justice Alexandre de Moraes, might decide within the next week whether the suspension should be lifted.
