*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest report on urban poverty and destitution, which shows that the poverty rate significantly increased in the first half of 2024, reaching 52.9% (15.7m people), up 11.2 percentage points compared to the second half of 2023 and up 12.8 percentage points year-on-year. It also showed a rise in extreme poverty with 18.1% of those surveyed living in extreme poverty, up 6.2 percentage points on the second half of 2023. This is equivalent to 5.4m people living in extreme poverty.
