In brief: Costa Rica hails rise in goods exports

*Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency (Procomer) has released new figures showing goods exports totalled US$12.96bn by end of August, up 7% on the same period in 2023. It highlights medical devices as the country’s leading export sector, accounting for 42% of total exports, and posting 12% growth year-on-year. Agriculture (which accounts for 19% of total exports) was up 7% driven by products such as pineapples, bananas, and watermelons. As regards export markets, the Procomer report notes that double-digit growth was registered in various regions bar Asia, where exports fell by 4%, mainly due to a drop in exports of electrodiagnostic equipment. In contrast, exports to North America and Europe were up 10% and 11% respectively, in both cases driven by medical devices. Exports to the Caribbean were up 1%, while exports to Central America and South America were up 2% and 6% respectively.
