Seven foreigners have been arrested in Venezuela and accused of plotting to topple President Nicolás Maduro’s government. The authorities have presented no evidence to support their allegations against the foreigners, who come from the US, Spain, and the Czech Republic. The arrests were followed on 18 September by the government’s publication of a statement signed by the opposition presidential candidate, Edmundo González, now living in exile in Spain, in which he concedes defeat in the disputed 28 July presidential election. The statement’s validity was rejected by González, who says that he signed it under duress. End of preview - This article contains approximately 987 words.
