*The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced that its Western Hemisphere director,
Rodrigo Valdés, who has been leading talks for a new debt deal with the Argentine government, will delegate programme negotiations to his deputy,
Luis Cubeddu, and the IMF’s Argentina mission chief,
Ashvin Ahuja. The IMF described this decision as a move to support
“constructive engagement” with the government led by President
Javier Milei. The removal of Valdés from the negotiations marks a boost for Milei, as Valdés has previously called for Milei to make better targeted spending cuts. In a
radio interview in July, Milei questioned the IMF official’s ideological leanings and claimed that Valdés was
“indulgent” with Argentina’s previous Peronist government. Valdés had served as Chile’s finance minister (2015-2017) in the left-of-centre administration of former president
Michelle Bachelet (2006-2010, 2014-2018).
