MEXICO: Sheinbaum names military leaders

Mexico’s President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced on 6 September who would be heading up the defence (Sedena) and navy (Semar) ministries in her government, which takes office on 1 October. Many of the most important posts in Sheinbaum’s cabinet had already been filled, with the president-elect seemingly deliberating for longer over her defence and navy ministers. Her relationship with the military will be closely watched by those who have consistently warned against creeping militarisation in Mexico, with the armed forces having seen its remit greatly expanded under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
