REGION: A drought-struck continent in flames

From southern Colombia to northern Argentina, much of South America is covered by swathes of black smoke, as forest and bush fires ravage across the continent. In the Amazon rainforest native indigenous peoples have difficulty breathing and seeing more than a few metres. In Buenos Aires ‘black rain’ fell as the smoke spread south and west. Satellite images show it crossing the Atlantic ocean too.
