MEXICO: El Mayo arrest shrouded in mystery

More questions than answers have emerged in the weeks following the arrest of two alleged leaders of the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) in the US at the end of July. On 15 August Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office (FGR) released a statement concerning two of the most mysterious aspects of the case: the extent of US involvement and the murder of Sinaloa politician Héctor Cuén Ojeda, which took place the same day as the arrests and is apparently related. This comes as Mexican authorities are attempting to get to grips with exactly what happened that day and how the DTO leaders ended up in US custody seemingly without any cooperation with authorities south of the border.
