BRAZIL: Wildfire emergencies declared in various states

Forest fires have intensified in several regions of Brazil, with the south-eastern state of São Paulo hitting a record number of fires for the month of August. The state government of São Paulo has declared emergencies in the worst affected areas, while the governments of Pará and Rondônia in northern Brazil have declared state-wide emergencies. Pressure is also building on the federal government to support the states’ wildfire response measures, as the supreme court (STF) has ordered the government to deploy military and security forces to address fires in the Amazon and Pantanal biomes.
