PANAMA/COSTA RICA: Mulino shores up neighbourly ties

Costa Rica’s Rodrigo Chaves has become the first foreign president to visit Panama since José Raúl Mulino took over the presidency last month. The meeting between the two right-of-centre leaders produced pledges to boost ties in various spheres, including diplomacy, trade, agriculture, tourism, and crucially, security and migration. Along with Colombia, the two countries are dealing with the impact of record migration through the Darién Gap, a roadless expanse of jungle on Panama’s border with Colombia, which serves as a key migration corridor to the US.
